What is a Psychometrist?
Psychometrists are psychological practitioners with special expertise in the use of psychological tests, who perform assessments and also contribute to the development of psychological tests and procedures in a variety of contexts including educational, work, career, health and Non-Governmental Organisations, Non-Profit Organisations and in the community.

What is a psychometric or psychological test?
A psychometric test is an objective and systematic method used to measure an individual's psychological attributes or constructs, such as intelligence, personality traits, abilities, aptitudes, attitudes, personal integrity, emotional and psychological functioning, and educational achievement and skills. Depending on the purpose for testing, it may be necessary to measure more than one aspect.
Psychometric assessments typically involve the use of tests, questionnaires, or other measurement tools that have been rigorously developed. All the assessment products we use are scientifically valid, fair and reliable and are approved for ethical and legal use in South Africa.
What are psychometric or psychological assessments used for?
While psychometric testing involves the actual measures that are used, psychological assessment is the process of combining psychometric testing and other techniques, such as clinical observation and collecting collateral information, to help provide information about a person and their behaviour, personality and capabilities.
The aim is to obtain a holistic view of the individual in order to guide decision making and to inform future interventions. All these aspects are considered and interpreted in assisting parents and caregivers to understand the specific needs of an individual better and to help them to maximise their potential.

Do I need to see a registered professional?
In South Africa, registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) is a mandatory requirement to practice as a healthcare professional and to be able to administer and interpret psychological tests as governed by the Health Professions Act (No. 56 of 1974).
